Obituary for Sally Elizabeth Foley

Sally Elizabeth  Foley
Sally E. Foley, age 75, died at Careage of Whidbey, Coupeville, WA on December 3, 2014. She was born March 9, 1939 in Portland, Oregon to Charles and Katherine McGinn. Sally was raised in Western Oregon and then moved to Ontario, OR where she graduated from high school. At age 16, during a weekend visit to Oregon State in Corvallis with her sister, she met a young student, Roger Foley. Love blossomed and on December 28, 1957, Sally and Roger were married.

Roger began active duty service with the U.S. Army and was sent to Ft. Belvoir, VA. This was the first of 32 active duty station assignments during Roger’s career with the Army. From Ft. Belvoir, they went on to Ft. Bragg, NC, where son Bryan was born. In 1960, Sally returned to Portland to be with her parents as Roger was sent to Korea and son Dennis was born. Returning stateside, the Foley family returned to Ft. Belvoir. In 1962, the Foleys moved to Vienna, VA while Roger served at the Pentagon and son Benjamin joined the family.

In 1963, the Foley’s received orders to Germany and daughter Shannon was born. Three years later they returned to the states and Ft. Lewis, WA. One year later Roger was ordered to Vietnam and Sally and the children moved to Fruitland, ID. In 1968, Benjamin was diagnosed with cancer and Roger was brought back to the states and transferred to Ft. Ord, CA. Ben was treated and eventually died from his cancer while the family was living at Fort Ord.

The next duty station was Ft. Leavenworth, KS and then on to Boulder, CO where Roger attended graduate school. In 1971, Roger was sent again to Vietnam and the family moved to Boise,ID. In 1972, Roger was sent to the Army Corps of Engineers in Savannah, GA and then on to Ft. Stewart, GA and then back to Ft. Belvoir. During their stay in Georgia, Bryan began his studies at the Citadel.

Roger retired from the Army in 1978 and the family settled in Richland, WA, where Roger was building a nuclear power plant. From Richland, the family moved to Bellevue, WA and then on to Miami, FL in 1984. In 1992, Sally moved back to Richland and Roger rejoined her in 1995. In 1996, Sally purchased a home in Coupeville and three years later, this became their permanent home.

Sally was always responsible for coordinating the family moves and gathering the family together and locating housing. She held the family together as they traveled the country. Sally had worked for a time as a counselor and also as a hospice chaplaincy volunteer in Richland. She enjoyed painting and ceramics. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Coupeville.

Sally is survived by her husband, Roger at the family home, and by her children and their spouses: Bryan and Kelly Foley of TriCities, WA, Dennis Foley of Houston, TX and Shannon and Michael Kogut of Sultan, WA and one sister Lillis Hoffer of Boise, ID and by five grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son Benjamin Foley, by one sister Maryjo and by one brother Charles.

Funeral Mass for Sally Foley will be celebrated on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 11am at St. Mary Catholic Church, Coupeville with Rev. Paul Pluth, J.C.L. as celebrant. A reception for family and friends will follow the Mass. Rosary will be recited on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014 at 7:00pm at St. Mary. Rites of Interment will follow at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, WA at a later date.
