Obituary for Opal Effie Dickson

Opal Effie Dickson
Opal Effie Dickson died at Island Hospital, Anacortes, WA on December 8, 2014 at the age of 89. She was born August 13, 1925 in Brisbane, North Dakota to Glen and Eva Bodie. Her family operated a store in Brisbane for several years, but the store was lost to the Great Depression.

Opal’s family left North Dakota and moved to Riverside, CA and started over. Dad worked as a carpenter and the family operated an avocado orchard. Opal graduated from high school in Riverside and then attended Palomar College in Escondido, CA. At the age of 25, she was married to George Wolfe. George was on active duty with the U.S. Navy and was sent to Jacksonville, Fl., where son Ken was born in 1948. The Wolfe family moved to Pax River, MD and Tom, Jack and Terry were added to the family. After living in military housing, George moved his family onto a farm in Maryland.

In 1955, the family moved to Oak Harbor, settling on Oak Harbor Road, near the Faber’s and the Palmer’s and James, William and Christie were added to the family. In 1960, George and Opal divorced. In 1962, Opal was married to George Dickson. Opal and George were involved in developing several homes and apartment buildings in Oak Harbor. Daughter Dorothy joined the family.

Opal was a very talented seamstress and helped support her family by making clothes for several of the local doctors and their families. She was never afraid of hard work and drove taxi for John Ferguson for a time. She was divorced from George Dickson and eventually, she discovered a new love of her life, Frank Boyle, a Blackfoot Indian from La Conner. She and Frank developed an incredible bond and spent much of their time traveling and enjoying each other’s company.

Opal loved the out-of-doors. She enjoyed camping, spending time at Rocky Point, cooking, bingo, sewing and family. She was a very serious rock hound. She was always collecting rocks, wherever she went. She also served as Grand Marshall for one of Oak Harbor’s annual parades.

Opal is survived by her children, Thomas, Jack, Terry, James, William and Christie Wolfe and Dorothy Bunch. She was preceded in death by one son, Ken Wolfe.
Opal requested no formal funeral services be conducted. Cremation was held with private family interment to follow. A family celebration of Life will follow at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Wallin Funeral home, Oak Harbor, WA. Please visit Opal’s page in the Book of Memories at www.wallinfuneralhome.com to share condolences and memories.
