Obituary for Stuart Archibald Chalfant

Stuart Archibald Chalfant
Stuart Chalfant – 1923 to 2016

Stuart Archibald Chalfant was born in Cleveland, Ohio July 23, 1923, the third child of Ruth Clarke and Allan Chalfant. He was raised in Rockville Centre on Long Island, New York. Stu shared fond childhood memories of boating with his family around the eastern seaboard. He was attending Dartmouth College when the US entered WWII. Volunteering for the Ski Troops, he saw combat action in Europe with the 10th Mountain Division as the youngest Sergeant in his company. He received a Purple Heart and other commendations.

After the war, Stu returned to Dartmouth and finished with a degree in anthropology. He met and married Betsy Roberts in Hanover, New Hampshire. Stu obtained a master’s degree from Columbia University in New York and began work with the US Justice Department researching Native American treaty issues in the Pacific Northwest.
Three boys were born to Stu and Betsy while they lived in Levittown, New York. Stu took a job with a defense contractor based in Santa Monica, California and worked with the US Air Force. After stints in New Jersey, Montana, Kansas and lots of traveling in between, the family settled in southern California.
After Stu and Betsy divorced in 1973, Stu went back to school and got a counseling certificate and worked at the VA Hospital. Stu married Hertha Champion in 1976, and they settled in Simi Valley, California. Stu and Hertha enjoyed many camping and traveling trips. Sailing their boat, Hanta Yo, was particularly satisfying and adventuresome. Stu and Hertha also had a jewelry making retail business, Silver Craft.

Stu always had a passionate love of life and socializing. He had several hobbies in which he became deeply involved and accomplished. They included jewelry making, rock and mineral collecting, astronomy, music, model trains and poetry. His silversmithing won awards at state shows. He built and sold telescopes as part of his astronomy, and his own poetry was published.

Stu and Hertha moved to Belmont Village, a retirement residence, in 2011. Hertha passed away in 2013. Stu moved to the northwest to be closer to his sons. He passed away May 14, 2016.

He is survived by his sons, Duncan and Kathy of Oak Harbor, Bruce and Betty of Enumclaw , Ed and Karen of Woodinville, as well as Hertha’s children, Peter and Susan Champion of Rodeo, California, and Michele Champion and George Donart of Anchorage, Alaska, as well as honorary daughter and good friend, Melissa Grossman of Simi Valley, California. Stu is also survived by his brother, Ed, and sister, Ginny. Stu leaves behind eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Evie and his wives.

Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
