Obituary for Thomas Hugh Cameron McArthur

Thomas Hugh Cameron McArthur
Rev. Dr. Thomas Hugh Cameron McArthur born May 1, 1940 in Cape Town, South Africa passed away suddenly in Oak Harbor, Washington on July 5, 2017. He leaves behind his wife, Linda, his first wife, Pam McArthur Perry of Bellingham, WA, their daughter Tracey McArthur of Weybridge, England, son Robert McArthur of San Francisco, CA, step-daughter Cici English of College Park, Maryland, step-daughter Amanda English Oliver of Carmel Valley, CA , their families, and numerous caring friends from around the world.

"Lover, Writer, drinker of fine wine (sometimes not so fine), Dreamer, Storyteller, Chef…eternally curious!"

Dr. McArthur graduated from Rhodes University in South Africa becoming a United Methodist Minister. The church transferred him and his young family to California where he served as pastor for churches in Mountain View, Half Moon Bay, Sonoma, Cupertino, and as a Superintendent in the Fresno district. He earned his PhD from the Pacific School of Religion at UC Berkeley, CA.

After marrying Linda and retiring from the church in 1993, Tom and Linda opened The Bountiful Basket at the Crossroads Shopping Village in Carmel. The store specialized in olive oil, vinegar, wine, and gift baskets. Tom also was a member of the Carmel Rotary Club, serving as Secretary and President.

In 2010, Tom and Linda moved to Weybridge, England for four years. There, they thoroughly enjoyed the enchanting community of Hamm Court surrounded by the Wey and Thames Rivers. They made remarkably lovely lifelong friends.

Tom's wish was to retire on Whidbey Island, Washington, which happened in 2014. Even though he suffered from motion sickness, he loved the sea, being surrounded by it, and riding the ferries. Planning, preparing, and sharing a fine meal and wine with family and friends was a joyful anticipation and happening for him. Tom embraced his magical life on Whidbey.

In retirement, Tom wrote. He loved words and he put much thought in the words he used. A quiet big man, whose elegant baritone immediately engaged your attention. His words expressed the passion, warmth, humor, and love in his heart. He was an intelligent man, a "real" person, who, everyday, demonstrated integrity, honesty, and loyalty…sometimes to a fault.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled on August 10, 2017 in San Diego, CA. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hearts and Hammers, P.O. Box 694, Langley, WA 98260-0694

At the beginning of their relationship, Tom promised Linda, "Marry me and you will never be bored!" No man ever spoke truer words.
