Condolences

Condolence From: Tim Eaves
Condolence: I was saddened to hear of the passing of Arnold. I don't know how old he was (I am not good with that kind of stuff), but I remember visiting him on Whidbey many years ago after he had retired, and I even bought one of his bird feeders. It worked great! The damned birds wore it out!

I am now semi-retired in a house my wife and I had built above Miller Bay, just north of Suquamish. It has been a long road to this destination, but the last legs of this trip surely began with my experience here in Washington State when I joined the Genie team, decades ago. My professional life covers many different companies, and the states of California and Washington. There is no doubt, however, that the highlight of my life has been the experiences that I had in those years at Genie. To this day, when I see Genie equipment, I feel that the hundreds of millions of sales that the company books each year would not have have been possible but for the first steps represented by the Z30-20 product. Even though the success of that product was indeed a team effort, I will always
cherish the relationship that Arnold and I had during the machine's startup. I always had great respect for the knowledge and experience that he had relating to how we could get that beast produced, and I always felt that he was more than respectful of my engineering knowledge, even if I was just a young know-it-all engineer, full of book learning. I think we made a good team. I hope he thought so, too. I hope he felt as much pride as I do when seeing all that Genie-blue equipment around. He was a big part of the success. Any sense of accomplishment I feel in the growth of the Genie brand is due in no small part to Arnold's contributions.

Again, it was some time ago that I last saw Arnold. I am not good with keeping up relationships with people. I will always have happy memories of Arnold, and I hope he remembered me the same. I probably will not be able to make the services on Sunday. Not a good time to do four ferry rides, I don't think. If I can figure something out, I will try to get there, but, if I am not able to be there in person, please know that I will be there in spirit.

Arnold was a good person. He was an important acquaintance, no, a valued friend, in my life. May he rest in peace.

Cordially,
Tim Eaves

Condolence: Brian, so sorry for your loss. You cant think of Genie without thinking about Arnold! In the early days of production most of us were just kids and no doubt Arnold was the father figure for us. There were too many "teaching" moments to remember, but I know that I learned a lot from him over the years and whenever you took the time to ask him for guidance or advice, he would do it. I found out very quickly that Paul Harvey was going to win out over ACDC on the radio at lunch time and can still hear Paul Harvey "good day" in my head.

Condolence: So many memories of this wonderful GENIE man:

His working relationship with Bud Bushnell was built on trust, respect, and professionalism. Their informal meetings and conversations shaped the products and the company.

Arnold would typically share his lunch break with Paul Harvey on the radio. Given the size of the shop in the early years you could hear the radio show from one end to the other ("Now, page 2...")

Arnold always had VERY tight control of the shop supplies cabinet. If you needed something out of that cabinet you had to deal with Arnold and might well come away with some 'coaching' to go along with your supplies.

We learned from Arnold that FORD meant "First on Race Day." For many years he drove a dark green FORD (Galaxie or Fairlane?). Arnold took great pride in keeping the vehicle well maintained and clean.

Arnold hired and groomed his eventual replacement in the Tooling Department, Helmuth Hintz. These two gentlemen formed quite a partnership and together made a GREAT team!

Arnold was a HUGE fan of the NEEE-braska Cornhuskers football program. The 'Huskers typically won all/most of their games so you really didn't have much ammunition should you try to contest the point that his team wasn't all that he cracked them up to be.

Arnold, as much as anyone, you truly deserve rest and peace.

Condolence: When I started Genie in 1966 I was all alone with an idea but no help to build it or make it a reality. It was my good fortune to meet Arnold and hire him on a part time basis. It didn't take long for me to realize I had a hard worker, multi-taskingman, capable of building or welding anything out of aluminum or steel. More important he had an inventive mind that could quickly analyze and contribute to the mechanical design and feasibility of whatever project we were working on. I would make a drawing of my idea, take it to Arnold and he would help me with common sense input on structural strengths and improvement ideas. He never complained about working in an old building with a dirt floor and poor heat and he would sit in the smoke of an old stick welder for as long as it took to get the job done.
One of the most important qualities of any worker is their loyalty to the company and getting to their job on time. When Arnold moved to Whidbey Island he would get up at 3:00 or 4:00 AM to commute and get to work on time. He always wanted to be the first to show up and even when I might get there a little sooner it upset him. In all the early years of Genie he worked six day weeks, 12 hours a day. I could set my watch at the time he walked in the door every morning,
When I look back at the first hard years of starting Genie I think of Arnold. I was privileged to have him on my team. I will be forever grateful for the memory of his dedication and friendship.

Condolence: Sorry to hear the news about Arnold. He gave me the opportunity to work at Genie back in 1978 and I will forever be grateful.
Arnold was tough as nails and all business while at work and that helped set the standard for everybody that walked through the door. AP was once described as a ‘Wizard with a Wrench’ in one of the Genie newsletters and he was definitely all of that and more.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire Paulsen family.

Take care.
