Lawrence B. Young

Lawrence B. Young (Larry) of Oak Harbor, WA was born August 11, 1925, to Benjamin Swan Young and Susanne Bottomley Young in New York City. He went home to be with his Lord and Savior on April 13, 2013. His family moved from Garden City, Long Island, to Connecticut in 1938. Larry was educated in prep schools and studied at Yale University for several years, majoring in Geology, but would later find his life’s work in Journalism and Music Review. While serving in the U.S. Army during WWII he was injured during a training exercise so never saw active duty. Larry learned later, when working as a finance clerk mustering out troops, that half of his regiment was killed in the Battle of the Bulge.

After the war and his stint at Yale, Larry’s first job was as a reporter for the Wall Street Journal. When he got the yen to move from the big city to quieter locales he moved out west, where he did some reporting for a Denver magazine and then, for a couple of months worked in Rock Springs, Wyoming. For five years he was Wire Editor for the Idaho Free Press in Nampa, then moved to Albany, Oregon as Managing Editor, and finally ended up in Spokane, WA where, for 21 years, he was a journalist for the Spokesman Review. He started a business tabloid and when that failed moved to Athol, Idaho where he found that he loved working in construction, which he did for several years. Larry was single 20 long years when, in April 2006, he met the love of his life, Loretta. They were married June 10 of that same year.

Larry was a man of many talents including snow skiing, gardening, singing, and travel. A special love of his was Thursday ballroom dancing with his wife at the Hillcrest Park Lodge in Mt. Vernon. He wouldn’t miss Sunday services at Whidbey Presbyterian Church for any reason and loved the Men’s Breakfast Group. Before marrying Loretta, he had been very active at Athol Baptist Church in Idaho and had many friends whom he greatly missed after moving to Oak Harbor. Larry volunteered at nursing homes in Coeur d’Alene for a number of years and also was a CPR Instructor.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Thomas S. Young. He is survived by his wife Loretta and stepdaughters Toni Neely and Traci Garrett. He was also close to Loretta’s children, Deanna Frederick and husband Tom, Woody Rose, and Joe Rose and wife Danice. He loved his “adopted” granddaughters Sarah Neely, Anna Frederick, and Linnea Frederick. He was looking forward to seeing the California grandchildren and great-grandchildren at granddaughter Katie Rose’s June wedding, but God had other plans for him.

A beautiful memorial service was held Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Whidbey Presbyterian Church in Oak Harbor, WA, with inurnment at Tahoma National Cemetery to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to either The Voice of the Martyrs, PO Box 443, Bartlesville, OK 74005 or Prison Fellowship, 44180 Riverside Parkway, Lansdowne , VA 20176.
