Obituary for Ray Lawrence Taylor

Ray  Lawrence  Taylor
Ray Lawrence Taylor died May 19, 2014 at Island Hospital, Anacortes at the age of 79. Ray was born September 3, 1934 in Bellingham, WA to Dr. Ralph and Catherine Taylor. Following graduation from Bellingham High School, Ray attended Western Washington College, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree.

Ray began his teaching career with the Oak Harbor School District in 1956. He taught elementary school for a time and then moved to Oak Harbor Junior High and North Whidbey Junior High, where he taught science. He also worked as a substitute bus driver for the district for a short time.

Ray continued his education through Louisiana State University, Oklahoma State, University of Oregon, and Idaho State and received his Master’s Degree from Texas A & M. Ray also taught at Chapman University, Skagit Valley College, and Embry Riddle and also for the Opportunity Program and Midway School in Oak Harbor. He retired in 2003 after 47 years of teaching.

Ray’s passion for teaching also involved hosting several after school programs within the district, including: Science Club, Camera Club and Rocket Club. He also enjoyed pheasant hunting with his dog Emily. Ray also had his prize model “A” which he loved to show. He was a member of the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge #2362, the American Legion Post 129 and the Oak Harbor Lions Club.

Ray is survived by his wife Naneta, one daughter Susan Thomazin of Renton and his twin brother Ralph L. Taylor of New Prague, MN. Four grandchildren and four step grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by one son Steve, his sister, and his parents.

Ray requested no formal funeral services be conducted. Cremation was held with private family interment. Friends and family are encouraged to share memories and condolences in the Book of Memories at www.wallinfuneralhome.com.
