Obituary

March 16, 1934 to Feb. 5, 2019

Norma Ackerman passed away peacefully in Coupeville, WA on Feb 5th, 2019 at age 84 after a long illness. She was born in Black Hawk County, Iowa, in 1934 to Walter and Ella Ackerman. She was a beloved sister, aunt, and friend to many, and is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Marian & John Bolte of Coupeville.
Norma leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews in Oak Harbor, Edmonds, Oregon, California, Colorado, and Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Evelyn Duden and Verna Ackerman, and brother Arlan Ackerman.

Upon receiving her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the Iowa State Teacher's College (now the University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, she taught for two years in Dixon, Illinois, and then taught 2nd and 3rd graders for 30 years Red Oak, Iowa. After her teaching career, she retired in Denver, Iowa, and then moved to Whidbey Island by train in 1997 to be closer to her family. She made many friends in Oak Harbor where she lived for most of her last years.

Norma is remembered for her kind and generous spirit, her wit and humor, and her deep love of reading. She will be dearly missed by family and friends. Donations in her memory may be made to your local public library, or she asked that a rose bush be planted for her somewhere.

Norma will be laid to rest at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in Iowa next to her family.

Arrangements entrusted Wallin Funeral Home, Oak Harbor, WA.

I believe I taught with Norma in the late 70’s and early to mid 80’s at Pleasant View Elementary School in Pleasant Valley, IA. She taught 1st grade. I know she moved back to the small community of Denver, IA. I either have the wrong woman, or someone was confused as to where she taught. The Norma I knew was also single. The photo certainly looks like the woman I taught with. She was so sweet to allow me to carpool with her as my wife and I only had one vehicle. I was a beginning teacher. I’m pleased to see Norma had such a long life. I’ve wondered about her through the years and wished I had kept in contact. May Norma Rest In Peace.

Family and friends you have my deepest sympathy. This is a difficult time for most. There are basic things that can help anyone get through the pain no matter what age, gender or religious beliefs. Many have been helped with the twelve basics or just a few. You can go to jw.org and get the basics with no cost ever. See the article “Help for those who grieve “ in the magazine section. Anyone can get help and comfort.
