Mary enjoyed making art, traveling, and reading. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern University in Illinois, and her Master of Fine Arts degree from San Jose State University in California. Mary specialized in glass and ceramics.

Mary fell in love with the Pacific Northwest and later retired and relocated with JT to Whidbey Island where they both became full-time artists.
