Obituary for Carrie "Jo" Josephine Long

Carrie "Jo" Josephine Long
CARRIE “JO” LONG

Carrie ”Jo” Long, resident of Warm Beach Health Care Center, Stanwood, was called home to her Lord and Savior, on March 1, 2014 at the age of 87. She was born in Gilbert, Arkansas to Joseph and Beryl Sanderson. She was raised near Tulsa, Oklahoma, and lived in Arkansas and Oklahoma during the oil boom and bust of the 1920’s.
The Sanderson family, which included Jo and 3 sisters, were all survivors of the Great Depression. Growing up, Jo developed her faith in God at an early age and she accepted Him at the age of 10.

During WWII, she worked as a secretary in a defense plant. She met a brash young man named Lloyd, who swept her off her feet and they were married in 1945 when he left the Navy. Jo and Lloyd moved to Wichita, KS where he was employed by Beech, Cessna and later, Boeing. Four sons were born in Wichita. For two years the Longs moved to Ann Arbor, MI to allow Lloyd to complete his master’s degree.

In 1963, Lloyd was transferred to the Seattle Boeing plant and the family settled in Bellevue. They were very active members of Rose Hill Presbyterian Church in Kirkland.

The sons were grown and on their own and with retirement from Boeing, Lloyd and Jo settled in Oak Harbor in 1985. They became very active members of the First Reformed Church of Oak Harbor and also of the Gideon’s International, Skagit Camp, serving as a church Elder and Gideon Officer. Jo’s faith in God became the focus of her life.

Jo is survived by three sons, David and wife Linda of Arlington, Roger and Pam Long of Ava, Missouri, and Mark and Tricia Long of Seattle. Also surviving are two sisters, Wilma Worley of Denver, CO and Betty Hamilton of Broken Arrow, OK and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd, one son Phillip and one grandson, Daniel.

Memorials may be made to the Gideon’s International, Skagit Camp, Warm Beach Christian Camp and Conference Center or the First Reformed Church.
