The Piper family spent the next 35 years in Woodinville. Ellie retired from the University of Washington Network Services as a communications technician.

Following retirement, Ellie and Tom settled in Oak Harbor and a comfortable home in the Whidbey Green “Active” Adult Community in September of 2008. Ellie survived six years of ovarian cancer and was fondly referred to as “my miracle girl” by husband Tom.
