Obituary for Donald Frederic Chambers

Donald Frederic Chambers
DONALD F CHAMBERS

Donald Frederic Chambers was called to the Lord on September 8, 2016 at the age of 86 in Snohomish, WA. He was born January 5, 1930 in Lake City, Florida to Frederick and Olivia Chambers. During WWII he planted a victory garden by himself using only a hoe so his mom had vegetables to feed their family.

At the age of 18, Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator, serving aboard the USS Valley Forge during the Korean Conflict. At the end of his enlistment, he settled in Bremerton working as a receiving clerk at the Bremerton shipyard. It was there he met the love of his life, Ruth Mary Hunter. They married at the Covenant Church of Bremerton in 1953.

After leaving the shipyard, Don attended the University of Washington, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree which he put to use teaching at Montlake Christian School.

In the early 50’s, Don and Ruth settled in Alderwood Manor, purchasing a large lot and creating their home for the next 60 years. This home created memories for their children, grandchildren and all their family.

He worked as a Senior buyer working in the manufacturing industry. Job experiences included Lockheed Ship Building, Aerojet, Boeing, Quinton Medical Instrument and Rocket Research. Don was a dedicated employee, always the first to work and had coffee ready when everyone else arrived.

His general dedication and loyalty to all he did in life was only overshadowed by his devotion to family and most importantly his wife, Ruth who relied on that dedication and strength every day they were together. Don will always be remembered as a man who was extremely generous. He always bought more than he needed so he had plenty to give away, His strong faith also showed in his dedication to the Covenant Church of Martha Lake where he was a long time member. No task was too large or too small, whether roofing a house while he was in his 70’s or helping with church building repairs into his 80’s, he was fiercely independent and hard working.

After leaving the family home in Lynnwood he spent the last several years as a resident of Washington Oaks in Everett before moving to an adult family home in Snohomish. In his final weeks on Earth, Don was surrounded by his family including a special weeklong visit from his sister Marilyn of Lake City, Florida.

He is survived by daughter Rose McAllister and husband Tom of Lake Stevens, son Roy Chambers and wife Colleen of Granite Falls, sister Marilyn Hamm of Lake City Florida, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Don is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Ruth, and his sister Eloise.

Cremation was held with a family memorial to be determined. Don will be buried at Floral Hills Cemetery, Lynnwood joining his wife Ruth. In Lieu of flowers the family requests gifts be made to Martha Lake Covenant Church 2721 164th St SW, Lynnwood, WA 98087
