Frances Davis Curtis
Frances C. Davis Curtis, 80, died at her home on Saturday, June 9, 2018, following a brief illness.
Frances was born in Oak Harbor, WA on Sept. 7, 1937, to Frank and Catherine VandeWerfhorst. At the age of two she moved with her family to Everson for two years, then back to Oak Harbor to a farm on Penn Cove. Frances attended Oak Harbor Christian School through eighth grade, then Oak Harbor High School where she graduated in 1955. She married John Ransome Davis on November 9, 1956.
Frances worked as a bookkeeper at Everett Trust and Savings Bank and helped out on the family farm until moving to San Jose, CA in 1959; following their return to Oak Harbor in 1963 she became the bookkeeper at Whidbey Manor and served several terms on the Oak Harbor Christian School Board, and as counselor for the Oak Harbor Christian Reformed Church Calvinettes Club. She loved sports, following Oak Harbor H.S. football and basketball teams to home and away games, and rarely missed listening to Sonic, and later Mariner, games on the radio. Her husband John died in 1980, several years later she moved to Yakima where she spent many years as bookkeeper and office manager at nursing/retirement facilities. In 1990 Frances married Leslie Curtis of Zillah, WA.; she and Les were active members of Zillah Nazarene Church and avid supporters of Zillah H.S. athletics. Together they back-packed and hiked to many areas of Washington, and put on many miles traveling to National Parks and sites throughout the U.S. Over the past decade she really took to social media and was nearly always the first to “like” a post by her sisters, children and grandchildren, and dozens of nieces and nephews.
She was proceeded in death by her first husband John R. Davis, her parents Frank and Catherine Vande Werfhorst, and sisters Pat Michael and Sylvia Kuhuski. She is survived by her husband Les Curtis; two children, Ken (Pam) Davis of Mount Vernon, and daughter Karen Huffman of Oak Harbor; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Diego) Mena, Brian (Nicole) Davis, Natalie (Jarod) Mendoza, Alisha Huffman and Chelsea Huffman; ten great-grand children, Jordan, Bailey and Penelope Mendoza, Cielo, Diego and Adalynne Mena, Tessa, Jaxson, Ransome and Rowan Davis; her second family, Les’ children Brent (Teri) Curtis, Trevor (Lindsey) Curtis, Bryce (Kristyna) Curtis, Kyle (Dianna) Curtis, Adrienne Curtis, and grandchildren Kayla, Bryce Jr., Ian, MeKenzie, Tateum, Teryn, Brooklynn, Gianna, Leila, Helo; seven siblings, Aldine (Ron) Leistra, Marilyn (Howard) Vander Griend, Eileen Hale, Frank (Deena) Vande Werhorst, Bill Vande Werfhorst, Jerry (Katherine) Vande Werfhorst, and Sharon (John) Lusk, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews .
A private family graveside service will take place at Fircrest Cemetery. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 11:30 on Saturday, June 30 at Oak Harbor Christian Reformed Church, Pastor Randy Beumer officiating. A reception and light lunch hosted by the family will follow.
There will also be an opportunity to share stories and memories at the reception.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Oak Harbor Christian School and Veterans Organizations.
