Airplane Genius

Alan was a great friend of mine.  He had a vast knowledge of aircraft of all types and makes.  His life was his airplanes, his work, and his wife and son.  Alan had a very unique sense of humor, and all of us who knew Alan well appreciated his humor and stories.  I often remarked to folks who did not know Alan well that the best way to tell if Alan is "kidding" you is when his lips move.

One time when I was with Alan on an airplane engine tune-up, he turned a small wheel inside the engine compartment and asked me to check the light at the end of the port wing to see if it would light up.  When I reached the end of the wing, and the light was not lit, I looked over to Alan and could see this grin from ear to ear telling me "gotcha".

Alan will be deeply missed by those who really knew him, but our memory of Alan will live forever, especially with the PBY-5A that sits today along Pioneer Ave. in Oak Harbor.  Alan is the primary reason that that PBY exists today.  That is where I first met Alan, and it will always remind me of this remarkable man and his talents.
